Georgian Polyphony

Georgian polyphonic singing, recognized as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is a captivating a cappella tradition typically performed in three voice parts.

Singing is deeply woven into Georgian life — accompanying daily activities from working the fields to healing, from celebrations to expressions of love and mourning.

Meet your Guides and Local Hosts

Holly and Swan met while living and singing in Georgia, where they collaborated with renowned musicologist David Shugliashvili. They also worked with Frank Kane, a leading expert in Georgian music, and trained in numerous embodied voice practices through organizations like the Natural Voice Network and the Roy Hart Centre.

Holly is the host of Voices of the Ancestor, the only podcast dedicated to Georgian singing, and leads the Oxford Georgian Choir. Swan, psychotherapist and founder of the Institute of Devotional Arts, has led workshops and retreats across 20 countries. They both view the voice as an instrument of connection and transformation.

The Tour

28 August – 5 September 2026

Over our 9-day journey, we’ll immerse ourselves in three stunning locations in rural Western Georgia. Each day features traditional singing, cultural exchange, and vocal coaching alongside visits to cultural heritage sites and places of breathtaking natural beauty.

Day 1 — Imereti to Samegrelo

Meet by Kutaisi Cathedral, then drive to Ledzadzame andsettle into Nino Naneishvili’s grandmother’s traditional Megrelian oda house. Evening welcome supra with homemade dishes, wine, and family songs.

Day 2 — Samegrelo

Morning master class with Nino, learning songs from the Ialoni Ensemble and her ancestral village. Afternoon walk through the hills, feeling the gentle rhythm of Megrelian life.

Day 3 — Samegrelo to Ajara

Sing a final round with Nino, then depart for Ajara. Lively lunch at Beso’s folkhouse in Zugdidi before following the coast to Merisi to meet the Turmanidze family.

Day 4 — Ajara

Morning masterclass with Beso Turmanidze, discovering the lively ornamentation and dance-like feel of Ajaran songs. Afternoon walk and swim at a nearby waterfall.

Day 6 — Ajara to Guria

Travel to Guria with a pause to swim in the Black Sea. Arrive in Lanchkhuti for a Gurian supra with the Turkia family.

Day 7 — Guria

Morning masterclass with Avto Turkia, exploring Gurian polyphony with its daring harmonies and playful dissonances. Quiet afternoon for reflection in the surrounding hills.

Day 8 — Guria

Continue learning Gurian songs with Avto. Visit a peaceful monastery, then sink into the slow rhythm of village life.

Day 9 — Guria to Imereti

Final songs and lunch with Avto’s family before returning to Kutaisi. Gather for a closing ceremony at Bagrati Cathedral, sealing our journey with shared memories and new friendships.
